Further Afield
Marlborough's central location makes it an ideal base from which to explore some of the region's neighbours. To the west, Nelson is less than a two-hour drive away and Westport, on the South Island's West Coast, is about 3˝ hours.

To the south, Christchurch offers a thriving night-life and is renown equally for its cafés and wine-bars as its internationally recognised art gallery. Inland from Christchurch is Hanmer Springs Thermal Resort where a few days can spent enjoying Hanmer's stunning alpine scenery and soaking in the hot pools.

It's a Fact!

THE BROTHERS
The Brothers is a group of tiny islands in Cook Strait, off the west coast of Arapawa Island. The island group is a sanctuary for a rare reptile species, the Brothers Island tuatara. Found only on The Brothers Islands, it differs from the common tuatara in having olive skin with yellowish patches. Although resembling lizards, tuatara are related equally distantly to lizards and snakes, which are their closest living relatives.
