Early harvest
Wines that are produced in the coolest years when grape ripeness doesn't achieve full maturity. The wines are low in alcohol, light and easy to drink despite having high natural acidity.

Earthy
A term used to describe wine that has a taste or smell reminiscent of soil or mushrooms. Often part of a terroir related characteristic of mature red wines such as Pinot Noir.

Eiswein
German for ice wine, a dessert wine made from frozen grapes.

Elegance
A term applied to wines that are expressed in a refined or delicate manner, showing finesse rather than power and weight.

Estate bottled
A phrase used on wine labels to imply quality and declare that the wine was produced and bottled at the winery from grapes owned and grown by the winery owner.

Esters
Aromatic flavour compounds which give fruits, juices and wines much of their "fruitiness."

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol)
The type of alcohol produced by yeast fermentation of sugar under ordinary conditions.

Extended maceration
A winemaking process for red wines where the juice is left in contact with the grape skins for an extended length of time after fermentation is complete.

Extra dry
A Champagne or sparkling wine with a small amount of residual sugar. Not as dry as Brut.

D'URVILLE ISLAND
Separated from the South Island by the narrow French Pass channel, d'Urville Island is the largest island in the outer Marlborough Sounds. With an area of approximately 150 square kilometres, it is the eighth-largest island of New Zealand. The island is named after Rear Admiral Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville, a French explorer and naval officer who explored the south and western Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica.
